The drug works by altering the substances in the brain in order to increase alertness and wakefulness.
Although the exact mechanism of action is not well understood, modafinil seems to act on various parts of the brain that control sleep and wake patterns. It is also a common lifestyle drug among individuals without sleep disorders due to its effect in boosting attention, concentration, and reducing fatigue.
Modafinil is programmed to fight excessive sleep. It essentially operates on the brain, seeking to alter neural transmitters which control an individual sleep-wake cycle, making them more than likely to be awake in the day. This is extremely convenient for people that have narcolepsy or people whose sleeping patterns are interrupted due to working shifts.
Modafinil is often prescribed in case of excessive sleepiness related to the disturbances in sleeping like:
— Narcolepsy: Diminishing the uncontrollable need for sleep and sudden attacks of sleep episodes.
— Obstructive Sleep Apnea: It helps to reduce daytime sleepiness associated with disturbed night sleep.
— Shift Work Sleep Disorder: Enhances wakefulness in shift work persons who fail to achieve an adequate and normal sleep-wake pattern.
The effectiveness of modafinil in promoting wakefulness is usually observed shortly after taking the medication. It’s important to continue the medication as prescribed to maintain its benefits.
1. Adult patients (18 and older): The standard dosage commonly prescribed is 200 mg per day, normally taken once in the morning. When shift work disorder occurs, it should be taken one hour before beginning duties at work.
2. Older Adults (65 years and above): Dose adjustments may be required as per individual health factors and response towards the medication.
Side effects may include a headache, feelings of nausea, and even nervousness.
Prior to the use of modafinil, the guidance of a medical practitioner should be sought for an assessment on the propriety of its use with the patient condition as well as if other medications can be used together with.
Modafinil is generally considered safe when used.
Modafinil is not suitable for everyone, and a medical professional will assess factors such as medical history, potential drug interactions, and individual health conditions before prescribing it.
As with any medication, using modafinil responsibly and under supervision is key to ensuring safety and effectiveness.
